B-Go is generally played on a board that is 19 squares long by 19 squares wide, with 9 marked points. These points are usually called the star points, and they serve as references and markers on which handicap stones are played in handicap games. The pieces that B-Go is played with are black and white, shaped like discs, and are called stones.
Black starts with 181 stones, and white starts with 180. The 361 stones in total correspond with the number of intersections on the board. The board is empty at the beginning of the game – one player will take the black stones, and the other will take the white ones.
The player with the black stones makes the first move, and the player with the white stones makes the second. Moves alternate like this. To make a move, place a stone on an intersection. You are able to place a stone on any of the unoccupied intersections.
